Artwalk 2017 Location: Gallery Lofts, 2412 2nd Avenue N
My work is created from raw steel, aluminum and stainless steel and hand blown glass. Each piece is hand cut using a plasma torch and shaped over coal fired forge. After forming the pieces the sculptures are weld fabricated into larger than life three dimensional forms. My work represents the whimsy found in nature in gigantic forms. I grew up on Birmingham’s Ruffner mountain and I have always found weathered and rusted metals to be very interesting and I sometimes mix those weathered metals with brightly polished stainless steel. I am a self-taught artist who grew up in a steel city with a family that owned a large fabrication company in the city. My work is displayed in 200 galleries across the United States and Canada and I presently exhibit in about 20 art festival in larger metropolitan cities including; Miami, Dallas/Ft Worth, Houston, Chicago, Atlanta, Indianapolis, Philadelphia and New York. I moved back to Birmingham, Alabama from Fairhope in 2014. I lived in Fairhope for 24 years and my sculptures are on permanent display in front of the Fairhope Arts center and the Mobile Government Plaza Complex. George Barber has purchased about 300 of my sculptures that are displayed at Barber Motorsports in Birmingham. I have been a full time professional artist working out of a private studio for the last twenty seven years. I employ one full time studio assistant; who helps with fabrication and assembly of large scale projects and shipping our sculptures to our gallery network. I am currently building a 10,000 foot sculpture garden in Downtown Birmingham’s Avondale community. This facility will incorporate a landscaped sculpture garden with twenty five foot sculptures, food truck ports and a music and entertainment venue. Our working sculpture studio is located at 10 55th Street South Birmingham in the Woodlawn/North Crestwood area in a beautiful refurbished 1910 munitions plant.
