Kelli Hovanes is an Alabama born artist with background in Theater Tech, Costuming, and Studio Arts. Her primary media is finely hand tooled and painted leather masks. Kelli decided to work with leather rather than something more delicate like paper or ceramic so her work could be worn and loved without fear of damage.  They are meant to be touched as much as they are meant to be displayed.

She believes that a good mask does more than hide your face, it creates a space between you and the world. They are armor, both physical and emotional so the wearer can be something new and vulnerable, in a state of flux beneath.

Her work is inspired by theater, mythology, fairy tales, monsters, nature, and dreams. Kelli’s masks are completely handcrafted without the use of molds through the process of wet-forming so each one is a unique piece. They have recently been featured in productions of Fallstaff at Wolftrap Theater, ABC’s fantasy television show Once Upon A Time, and Cirque du Soleil's  One Night for One Drop.
