Jessica Cohen was born and raised in Houston, Texas. She was very involved in art as a young child and on through her high school years. She was accepted into a nationally recognized art- making workshop organized by the Blaffer Galley, the Art Museum of the University of Houston. During her time in the Young Artist Apprenticeship Program she was able to work with new mediums and display her works of art in an exhibition. At the end of the program Jessica was awarded one of two scholarships.
Jessica continued to use her artistic abilities through college and dabbled in different art mediums in her spare time and created art pieces upon request. While in undergraduate she found a new passion in floral design. She earned her bachelor’s degree in Horticultural Sciences and studied at the Benz School of Floral Design at Texas A&M University.
After college, painting and mixed media became less part of her life but she continued to work at flower shops during the holidays to feed her creative spirit.
Jessica and her husband moved to Birmingham, AL in 2016. Cohen quickly got involved with Birmingham Artwalk and volunteering for the event has inspired her to jump back into painting.
Jessica is comfortable using a variety of different mediums in her artwork, ranging from watercolor, acrylic, charcoal, to pen and pencil. She creates artwork showcasing all things related to nature. Her collection includes charcoal drawings of animals, acrylic paintings of beetles and watercolor flowers.
Her frequent use of stationary inspired her to create her very own original butterfly cards. These butterflies are hand painted using watercolor (a replica of her personal butterfly collection) and are then scanned in and printed onto premium blank note cards. Jessica hopes these printed cards help keep snail mail and personal thank you cards alive.
