I make a hybrid of fantasy and Mexican folk art. I was born in Mexico and grew up immersed in a culture rich with color and the impulse to create beauty from death and the discarded. I mainly focus on mixed media projects– I use all sorts of mediums from chalk sprays, which I find leave the best textures, to gessos and homemade texture pastes and plaster to cast skulls with. I also use different types of terazzo resins when I can get my hands on them to make “calaveras” In short, the fusion of elegance and decay is perhaps the most beautiful marriage in human history– I LOVE “calaveras” and Mexican sugar skulls, which are adorned with color and jewels and tokens valued by the loved ones of the departed.
