Rosalia Reyes is a second generation Latina who grew up Birmingham, AL. As an illustrator, she draws hyperrealistic animals endemic to the Southeast and South America with color pencil and mixed media. In 2021, she graduated from UAB with a BFA, though she originally studied materials engineering. In her senior show, Reyes pieced together local animal lore of the Andes to family members who represented them. Her current work is expanding into a whole family tree that reveals the complex relationship of not only Latin families, but everyone’s families. In her downtime, she keeps her hands busy by folding and binding paper into three-dimensional structures. Through origami and bookbinding, she incorporates what she learned about different materials and structures into her art today.
