When it comes to my recent work, narrative portraiture accompanied by short text, it is easy for me to worry that my paintings will verge on the side of the ‘motivational poster’ movement. This is not my intention and also not an area I want to be marginalized to. As a result I have taped a note above my studio desk this summer which reads “Make the beauty undeniable, so you can say whatever the you want” ….which brings me to where I am now; writing powerful text to accompany my work but making the portrait itself so strong that the words simultaneously drop away from it. Each portrait is made from watercolour paints and metallic leaf on paper, consisting of the image of man intertwined with nature, with a heavy nod to the style of art nouveau.
