Sommer Simpson is a Birmingham-based artist and teacher. She is continually inspired by the history, growth, and renewal of her local scene. She first became exposed to the polarized facets of the city while playing music around town. The juxtaposition between decay and renewal weaves its way onto her pieces. She communicates this with gritty, abstract backgrounds – bold color bleeding from top to bottom like rain. The order of the architecture looms in the foreground, near silhouettes, subtly defined by the iconic details of each edifice. Her expressive textures are applied using a variety of tools, brushes, palette knives, and fingers in acrylic mediums.
